Record a VirtualDJ Mix on Windows: Setup and Checks

Quick answer. Use VirtualDJ recording settings, choose a writable destination, and make a short test before a full mix. Recording availability depends on the audio routing and the source material.

Start with material you can record

Use local music files you are entitled to record and distribute for your intended purpose. A track that plays from an online catalog is not automatically recordable. Provider restrictions can differ from the features available with local files.

This guide does not provide a method to bypass a catalog's restrictions. Check the current provider rules before planning a streamed recording.

Pick a destination deliberately

Choose a folder with enough free space and confirm you can write to it. Give the test a recognizable name. Keep the recording destination separate from a temporary folder that might be cleared automatically.

Review the application's recording format options and choose one appropriate for your later editing or sharing workflow. Do not change several encoding settings at once when trying to solve a routing problem.

Make a thirty-second routing test

Play a local track, move the channel level, and record a short sample. Stop the recording, locate the resulting file and play it in a separate application. This checks the result rather than relying only on a moving meter.

If an external hardware mixer combines the audio outside the computer, the recording path may need a return input or loopback configuration. The publisher's recording and audio setup instructions explain these cases; a normal internal-mixer setup should not be copied blindly.

Check microphone and effects behavior

Decide whether the microphone and effects should be included, then test them explicitly. A microphone audible through hardware monitoring is not necessarily present in the computer recording. Watch for feedback when adding a return signal.

Keep speaker and microphone levels low during testing. Record each change so that the setup can be restored if the new routing causes a problem.

Review before deleting source material

Listen to the start, a transition and the ending. Check that the file has the expected duration and that it is not silent or distorted. Preserve the original recording until any edits or export have been checked.

Does pressing Record prove a usable file was created?

No. Confirm the saved file, its size and playback after a short test.

Can I record every music-service track?

Do not assume that. The service's rules and the application's integration can restrict recording even when playback works.
